US shooting down balloon 'seriously damaged' relations, says China; recovery of 'spy' balloon parts underway

The US has deployed the Navy to recover parts of a Chinese balloon after it shot down the white orb it believed was spying on "sensitive areas" across the country.

By Adarsh T R: US fighter jet F-22 Raptor fired a missile and downed a suspected spy balloon from China, bringing an end to a saga that lasted over a week. The US Navy is currently conducting recovery operations, with the Coast Guard assisting in securing the area. But China has said the US shooting down the balloon has "seriously impacted and damaged" relations with Washington.

A successful recovery of an "intelligence-collection pod" could potentially give the United States insight into China's spying capabilities, though the Pentagon has downplayed the balloon's impact on national security.

The suspected spy balloon, about the size of three school buses, was spotted over Montana in the US, home to one of three nuclear missile launch facilities, on Friday. If the US had shot down the balloon then, 2,000 people in Montana could have been in danger from scattered debris, The Washington Post reported.

Hence, US officials decided to down the suspected spy balloon when it was over the Atlantic Ocean with President Joe Biden later saying he wanted it to be taken down ASAP.
Here are the top developments.

The intelligence-collection pod of the spy balloon fell into the Atlantic Ocean largely intact and it should provide a useful opportunity to examine Chinese intelligence and communications systems, the Pentagon said in a press conference. The debris landed in 47 feet of water, shallower than officials had expected. Recovery will be completed soon.

USS Oscar Austin, a Navy destroyer, the USS Carter Hall, a dock landing ship, and the USS Philippine Sea, a guided missile cruiser, are all part of the recovery effort.

Navy divers along with unmanned vessels have also been deployed to recover debris and lift it back up to the ships. The FBI will also be present to categorise and assess anything recovered, AP reported.

Republican lawmakers on Sunday accused China of deliberately surveilling sensitive US military sites using a spy balloon and said the Biden administration had given Beijing an "intelligence opening" by not downing the balloon earlier.

Former President Donald Trump and his former national intelligence director, John Ratcliffe, also denied Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin's assessment that similar balloons had transited the United States during his presidency.

"China had too much respect for 'TRUMP' for this to have happened, and it NEVER did," Trump wrote on Truth Social.

The Pentagon will brief US lawmakers in the Senate on the balloon and Chinese surveillance on February 15.

But mystery remains over why China would send a balloon, with capability to maneuver, on the eve of US Secretary of State Antony Blinken's first visit to Beijing. The top diplomat cancelled the trip after the white orb was sighted above Montana. Blinken's visit was seen as an opportunity to stabilise an increasingly fractious US-China relationship.

China blasted the Pentagon's decision to shoot down the balloon and warned of a "necessary response." Beijing said the US was clearly overreacting and seriously violating international practice.

"China expresses strong dissatisfaction and protests against the use of force by the United States to attack the unmanned civilian airship," the foreign ministry said in a statement on Sunday.

But Republican lawmakers believe that China was using the balloon to figure out how to counter US nuclear weapons and missile defense systems. Republican Marco Rubio said Beijing was trying to send a message that it could enter US airspace.

The downing of a suspected Chinese spy balloon just off South Carolina’s coast on Sunday created a spectacle over one of the state’s tourism hubs.

“It looked like stars falling down,” a 12-year-old boy told AP.
